Google Ads AI Max Is Changing: What Advertisers Need to Check in 2026

Google Ads is becoming more automated.
If you are still using Dynamic Search Ads (DSA), there is an important change coming: Google is moving eligible campaigns toward AI Max for Search.
The September 2026 transition is not just a campaign-setting change.
It also makes conversion tracking more important than ever.
What is changing?
Google is moving DSA campaigns toward standard Search campaigns with AI Max features.
AI Max can help Google decide:
- Which searches to target
- Which ad text to show
- Which landing page to use
- Which users are more likely to convert
This can create more opportunities, but it also means Google has more control.
And that leads to the bigger question:
Are you giving Google the right conversion data?
The 7-day offline conversion issue
This is especially important for businesses that close sales through a CRM.
For example:
Google Ad → Website Lead → Sales Team → Qualified Lead → Customer
The final customer conversion may happen days or weeks after the original lead.
Google's attribution modeling has a 7-day window for offline conversions.
If an offline conversion is uploaded more than 7 days after the original conversion event, it may not be included in Google's attribution modeling reports.
However, this does not mean the conversion disappears completely.
Google says later-uploaded conversions can still appear in standard reporting and can still be used by Smart Bidding, depending on your conversion setup.
The practical lesson is simple:
Don't wait weeks to send your CRM conversion data to Google.
What should you check before AI Max?
Before the upgrade, audit these areas:
1. Conversion tracking
Make sure Google is optimizing for the conversions that actually matter.
Don't optimize only for:
- Form submissions
- Phone clicks
- Page views
If possible, feed Google better signals such as:
- Qualified leads
- Sales opportunities
- Completed purchases
- Revenue
2. GA4 and Google Ads
Check that your GA4 and Google Ads conversions are configured correctly.
Look for duplicate conversions and outdated conversion actions.
3. CRM conversions
If your sales happen in a CRM, check:
- Are conversions being sent to Google?
- How quickly are they uploaded?
- Are GCLIDs being captured?
- Are conversion values correct?
- Are failed uploads being monitored?
Try to keep offline conversion uploads within 7 days when you want them available for Google's attribution modeling.
4. Landing pages
AI Max may send traffic to different pages.
Check that your important pages are:
- Relevant
- Fast
- Mobile-friendly
- Easy to understand
- Built around a clear CTA
- Properly tracked
Don't let Google send expensive traffic to a page that isn't designed to convert.
5. Watch the search terms
After the upgrade, don't just look at clicks and impressions.
Look at:
Are we getting the right customers?
Track:
- Cost per qualified lead
- Cost per opportunity
- Sales
- Revenue
- ROAS
More conversions don't always mean better results.
The bigger lesson
AI Max isn't something advertisers should simply turn on and forget.
The more control Google takes over targeting and bidding, the more important your data becomes.
Think of it like this:
Bad data + AI = faster bad decisions
Good data + AI = better optimization
So before asking:
"Should I use AI Max?"
Ask:
"Is my conversion tracking good enough to let Google optimize my campaigns automatically?"
That is the real 2026 Google Ads audit.
If you're running Google Ads, now is a good time to check your conversion tracking, CRM integrations, GA4 setup and landing pages before the transition reaches your campaigns.
